Emerald Ash Borer Update

Adult Emerald Ash Borer

The Emerald Ash Borer has been found in the east end of Glenview. This penny sized menace has devastated millions of ash tree species in the Midwest and if not controlled, could potentially wipe out the ash tree in North America. The adult beetles cause very little damage to the ash trees by nibbling on foliage. The larvae feed under the bark, which disrupts the tree’s capability to convey water and nutrients.

Emerald Ash Borer Facts

  • It attacks only ash trees.
  • Adult Beetles are metallic green and about ½ inch-long and 1/8 inch wide.
  • Adults leave a D-shaped exit hole in the bark when they emerge in the spring.
  • Woodpeckers like the Emerald Ash Borer larvae. Heavy woodpecker damage on ash trees may be a sign of infestation.
  • The Beetle is most attracted to unhealthy or stressed trees but will attack and kill healthy trees.
  • The Emerald Ash Borer can fly at least a ½ mile.

You can help:

  1. In the spring, look for a thinning canopy or dying branches near the top of the tree.
  2. Inspect the bark for “D” shaped exit holes, roughly 1/8 inch in diameter or cracks that may be over larval galleries.
  3. Look for woodpecker holes which are larger and easier to see than the D-shaped exit holes left by the beetles. Woodpeckers often attack larvae, especially during winter.

If your tree is already infected with the Emerald Ash Borer, there is no effective treatment.
