When the Power Goes Off

If your power goes off, first check with your neighbors to see if they have lost power also. If not, reset your circuit breaker.

Please don’t call 911 or the police department for power outages. It’s important to keep 911 lines open for true emergencies!

During a power outage remember these helpful tips:

  • Keep emergency supplies on hand.
  • Don’t immediately open windows - keep the cool in as long as possible.
  • If you are using a portable generator or barbecue grill, keep them outdoors - carbon monoxide will kill you.
  • Keep blinds and draperies closed to keep the sun out of the house.
  • Open refrigerator or freezer only when necessary.
  • Flashlights with fresh batteries, candles and portable radios are essential during a power failure.
  • Turn off all appliances including refrigerators, TV’s, VCR’s, microwaves, and computers.
  • Restrict activity to stay cool.
  • When the power returns wait a few minutes before turning on lights and appliances. Then do so one at a time.

If you are driving during a power outage and you encounter a dark, nonfunctional traffic signal, treat it as a four-way stop. Yield the right-of-way, then proceed with extreme caution.
