Always Expect a Train
Important tips from Operation Lifesaver:
- Expect a train on any track at any time.
- Use caution at any grade crossing any time of the day or night.
- Before crossing, carefully look in both directions, and be prepared to stop if a train is sighted.
- Don't get trapped on a grade crossing.
- Never drive onto a grade crossing until you are sure you can clear the tracks.
- Don't try to race a train to the crossing.
- Watch for a second train when crossing multiple tracks.
- Never ignore flashing lights and gates and wait to cross only after the gates are raised and the lights stop flashing.
Remember, a typical mile long train can weigh over 6,000 tons. When traveling at 50 mph such a train requires up to one and a half miles to stop, even under the best of emergency braking situations. When it comes to railroad crossing safety, the bottom line must be "Always Expect A Train."
