U.S. Flag Etiquette Policy
PURPOSE
It is the policy of the Northfield Township Road District to display and fly flags in accordance with Federal regulations, historic guidelines and special proclamations issued by the President, Governor, Township Supervisor and Highway Commissioner.
PROCEDURE
It is the custom to display the U.S. flag (Flag) from sunrise to sunset on buildings and stationary flagstaffs in the open. When flown at night, the Flag must have a spotlight on it. For practical reasons, Northfield Township Road District's Flag is flown around the clock.
Half-Staff Display Guidelines:
On Memorial Day, May 30th, the Flag must be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon, and then hoisted to the peak of the staff.
The Flag must be flown at half-staff on the death of any person listed below.
President or former President | 30 days from date of death |
Vice President | 10 days from date of death |
U.S. Chief Justice | 10 days from date of death |
Retired Chief Justice | 10 days from date of death |
Speaker of the House | 10 days from date of death |
Associate Justice of Supreme Court | Date of death until internment |
Cabinet Member | Date of death until internment |
Former Vice President | Date of death until internment |
President Pro Tem of Senate | Date of death until internment |
Majority Leader of House | Date of death until internment |
Minority Leader of House | Date of death until internment |
U.S. Senator - Illinois | Date of death and following day |
U.S. Representative - Illinois | Date of death and following day |
Governor of Illinois | Date of death and following day |
Foreign dignitary | As ordered by the President |
*Prominent local citizen(s) | Date of death until funeral |
*Township Employee | Date of death until funeral |
*Other situations | Date of death until funeral |
*As ordered by the Northfield Township Highway Commissioner or Supervisor.
Other Flag Information:
Frayed/damaged Flags should not be flown. They should be neatly hemmed or destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. Or, the frayed/damaged Flags can be dropped off at the Northfield Township Road District for proper disposal.
