Winter Parking Ban in Northfield Township!

It is against the law to leave a vehicle parked on a Township street from November 1st through April 1st, between the hours of 2AM to 7AM.

Vehicles in violation may be towed or ticketed.  In order to plow streets properly, the Township may have any vehicle that is left on a public street during the winter parking ban, towed. Vehicles parked on streets impede the progress of snow removal operations and make it virtually impossible to properly clear the streets.  When plows have to go around a parked vehicle, the snow left on a street is usually frozen solid by the colder weather that often follows a snowstorm in this area and creates a dangerous condition.

Reduce Residual Snow

Unfortunately, some snow invariably is deposited in driveways. The plowed snow simply has to go somewhere and the outer edge of the street along the parkways is the only logical location. Shovel snow to the right side of your driveways, as you face the street. This will help minimize the unavoidable effect of the residual roadway snow from street plows.

The Road District regrets any inconvenience but we are all in this together!

It’s Illegal to Place Snow into the Street!

It is illegal to plow or shovel snow from your driveway or sidewalk onto a public street so as to reduce its width. If you have a contractual driveway plowing service, please alert them to avoid creating safety and liability problems.

Cul-de-sacs

Cul-de-sacs must be plowed to the outside, a phenomenon attributable to centrifugal force, and to reduce the number of hazardous backing maneuvers.  Vehicles can’t effectively plow snow inwards in circles - it just doesn’t work.

Sidewalks - To Shovel or Not to Shovel!

As a courtesy to pedestrians, the Township urges residents to remove the snow from sidewalks. The State recognized liability concerns homeowners might have and passed the following statute: “Any owner . . . or agent . . . who removes or attempts to remove snow or ice from sidewalks abutting the property shall not be liable for any personal injuries allegedly caused by the snowy or icy condition of the sidewalk resulting from his or her acts or omissions unless the alleged misconduct was willful or wanton.” 745 ILCS 75/2.
